Mr Atkinson-MacEwen has strong senior management experience in both the Australian public service and Tasmanian state service. Prior to the appointment as Health Ombudsman in January 2014, Mr Atkinson-MacEwen was most recently the Tasmanian Ombudsman and Health Complaints Commissioner, and Energy Ombudsman.
In this role, he led and managed significant cultural change and process improvements within the Office of the Ombudsman and Health Complaints Commissioner. He was responsible for driving improvements in the delivery of health services and administrative practices in Tasmania, including improvements in the administration of opioid prescribing and in the administration of kinship care assessments for children in care in Tasmania.
Previous to this, Mr Atkinson-MacEwen was the Director of Liquor and Gaming and, for a time, the Commissioner for Licensing within the Tasmanian Department of Treasury and Finance.
Over his career, his responsibilities have included strategic analysis, policy formulation and implementation, the conduct of major investigations, administrative oversight and change management. He has extensive experience in working closely with key stakeholders such as Ministers and Parliamentary Committees, government departments and public instrumentalities, the business sector and community organisations.
Mr Atkinson-MacEwen has undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in history and languages (Mandarin).
